Water is an extremely valuable source of energy. People use water for many things even energy to power up machines. Water also powers up other things like homes and offices that people work in at when people are doing their jobs (For example front desks at hotels), heat energy to keep people warm, light and even keep factories working throughout day and night. The term energy comes from the Greek word energos and energos means something that is active or working (Things that need energy). Energy is used to activate things and make things work, this helps us do things like lifting objects or even moving them. Water power can also be used to make electricity for our machinery and other things that require electricity. For example when someone switches on a light in a room (or other places that may have lights) the energy sent to the light to turn it on might have come from the power of moving water.
The world of water moves continuously in a never ending cycle that happens because the energy that comes from the sun. The sun heats up the oceans on Earth (also other places with water, for example rivers) and changes the water into a gas (this is called water vapour) and then the gas rises into the air. While the gas travels into the air the gases start to form tiny droplets of water and then they begin joining together to form clouds. Eventually the water falls back to Earth when it rains, when the water falls onto land most of the water comes back into rivers and then the rivers takes water to the ocean and then the water cycle starts again. This is how we are provided with our renewable resource of water. When someone puts their hand over a fast-flowing stream or if they put their hand underneath a running tap, they will be able to feel the power of running water. Rivers flow naturally when water falls from higher to lower ground because of the force of gravity. Water in rivers or oceans also flows because of natural power of wind, currents and tides. We use all these different forms of making water flow to be used as a source of energy so we can produce mechanical an electrical power.
